Sample Chapter – Officer 2

Hey guys, the blog I was originally working on ended up taking a little bit more time than I had anticipated. So rather than miss a week I decided to upload a rough draft of some of Cindy’s police backstory. I think the cop stories are one of the most interesting parts of the book and I wanted to share some of that with you. Enjoy!

The night carried on and Cindy found herself dreaming of a time long past. When she first put on her bulletproof vest and wore the officer’s shield on her chest. She had never held her head higher. Her pride even turned her dainty footsteps into a slow, confident swagger. She wanted all of Manhattan to know that Cindy Brynfire was a New York City police officer.

Unfortunately, the moment was bittersweet. That same day introduced her to a partner that was reckless, rude, and undeserving to wear the badge, officer Daniel Gates. During her lunch break Cindy would talk to fellow officers, browse folders as thick as books, and search his name on the Internet. Why would the police force let such an obnoxious renegade stay on duty? She found her answer and it made her hatred of him grow even further.

“So you must be Cindy.” A tall, well-muscled man paraded past a row of parked squad cars. He had a thick head of fiery hair, freckles scattered over his skin, and a strong jaw that accompanied an ironically lovely smile. The width of his chest and size of his arms made Cindy’s athletic body feel puny in comparison.
She forced a smile and held out her hand. “Daniel, nice to meet you.”

He shook her hand as if he were going to crush it. “Just Dan is fine.” Cindy walked over to their assigned police cruiser when Dan cut her off and put his hand on the driver’s side door handle. “I’ll drive.”

Cindy clenched her jaw and rolled the bones under her skin. In a flash, Cindy tapped his hand and when he looked down his keys were gone. She jingled keys by her head and grinned. “I’ll drive.”

He stood there, mouth agape and watched her sit in the driver’s seat. “Okay. That was kind of impressive.” He ducked into the passenger side seat and stared into his empty hands. “You need to teach me how to do that.”

“Don’t pee on my desk anymore and I might consider it.” Cindy turned the engine and accelerated into a line of taxi cabs.
“I pee’d on a desk? I don’t recall. Must have been someone else.”

“Oh it was you. You kept screaming ‘Do you know who I am? Do you know who I am? I’m Dan Gates bitch! Suck my cock and I will grant you one wish.’ And then you vomited in a bucket, which was after you puked over your shoes. You don’t remember that?”

Dan laughed. “Grant you one wish? That’s classic. Sounds like it was a great night.”

“That’s one way to look at it.” Am I really going to be stuck with this moron for the rest of my life? Never had she hated the cop phrase, ‘You don’t pick your parents and you don’t pick your partner,’ than she did now.

He squinted his eyes almost as if he had read her mind. “Don’t try to tell me you’ve never been under the influence. No lampshade on the head? Stripping on a friend’s table? Waking up in a strange land?”

“I’ve done plenty of stupid things. None of them were under the influence.”

“Are you sure about that?”

She snapped her head in his direction. “Yes, I’m sure!” Her patience was already thinning and she barely knew the guy fifteen minutes.

“I remember watching a video of a short girl who looked just like you. She was so drunk that she couldn’t even keep her pretty little head upright. She was eating dinner with an attractive, tall, blond girl. Then all of a sudden some other chick approaches the two of them. Any of this ringing a bell?” Cindy closed her eyes and slammed her head into the car seat. “I’m not sure what that one girl said, but you stood up, took off your jacket, flexed your biceps in her face, and punched her so hard that she spun two times before hitting the floor.” He waited for Cindy’s reaction then smirked when she said nothing, checkmate. “And you’re going to lecture me about my drunken activities?”

Cindy raised her index finger and counted the reasons why her actions were justified. “First of all, I wasn’t ‘granting any wishes’ or peeing on desks, okay?” She raised another finger. “Second, she accused my sister of looking at her hideous boyfriend and called her a whore. Why would she look at him anyway? She was out of his league. No one messes with my sister, no one.”

“But would you have hit the girl if you weren’t drunk?”

Cindy faced forward and slammed her foot on the pedal. The cruiser roared past a yellow light before she had to slam on the brakes to avoid hitting a yellow cab in front of her. He got her again.

“Thought so.” He stared out the window and watched the pedestrians go by. “Let he who is without—”

“Shut up.”

Cindy sank into her seat and refused to make further eye contact. Even her head started to her from clenching her jaw so hard she could crack her teeth. It was the only way to prevent her mouth from getting her into more trouble. She fantasized about how satisfying it would have been to tell him what was really on her mind. Well we can’t all be the police commissioner’s son, now can we?
