When heroes go bad, who saves us from the hero?
The Silver Ninja - Prototype
The Silver Ninja – Prototype is technically the first book I had ever written. Had I continued in this direction, this also would have been the first book in The Silver Ninja series.
However, (much to the detriment of the SEO I had already built) I made the unfortunate decision to discontinue the book in its current state.
It’s a long story and one I’ve oft repeated every year. This was my first book, my baby, but it had some serious problems.
If you read the reviews on Amazon you’ll see mentions of purple prose, horrifically annoying characters, and a plot straight out of a B movie.
I tried to make this work by writing the sequel Indoctrination. In fact, The Silver Ninja was originally intended as two books. But when I wrote the second book, I realized there were more stories I wanted to tell. I hadn’t planned on writing multiple stories and thus wrote myself into unscalable walls. The amount of editing I had to do to make the original book work would have required a complete rewrite.
Cindy’s origin story felt weak. She was prone to melodramatic outbursts and violent mood swings with no rhyme or reason. There were some description and prose I wrote that make me cringe to this day, one is even a running gag in the current series.
Prototype is not that different from A Bitter Winter in terms of characters. The true difference is in plot, character development, and depth.
I will always have a soft spot for my first book, but the reality is I’ve outgrown it.
Prototype should be available for free on Amazon and Smashwords. I might decide to take it down once I have enough books to maintain my trademark. For now, if you want to read it, the links are above.
And I will say, although my purple prose was mostly ridiculous. It did have a beautiful rhythm that I haven’t been able to replicate since then.
